“Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.” –Barack Obama
So, during a recent interview with the New Republic President Barack Obama mentioned that he goes skeet shooting “all the time” at Camp David. Those seemingly innocent remarks led to, oddly enough, a media firestorm. During his presidency, at nearly every turn, it seems as if the first African-American President is being asked to constantly prove himself.
The criticisms over the president’s “skeet shooting” remarks were just as ridiculous as the criticism he received over his birth certificate, college transcript, and religious beliefs. Conservatives on the right were some of the loudest skeptics (of course!).
“If he is a skeet shooter, why have we not heard of this,” … “Why have we not seen photos,” Blackburn continued. “Why has he not referenced it at any point in time as we have had this gun debate that is ongoing?” – Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.)
Questions about the president’s “skeet shooting” remarks even made its way into the White House briefing room:
Why does President Obama constantly have to prove himself to the Republican right-wing. President Obama had to present his birth certificate in an attempt to silence “birthers” and now had to release a picture of him “skeet shooting” to silent “skeeters”. The White House takes it all in stride and often makes a joke of such episodes, but it is disheartening that the first African-American President is constantly being asked to prove himself. Is it because of his policies or maybe it’s because he’s black, I don’t know?
