“When it comes to just about everything we’ve done to strengthen our middle class, to rebuild our economy, almost every Republican in Congress says no. Even on things we usually agree on, they say no. If I said the sky was blue, they say no. If I said fish live in the sea, they’d say no. They just think it’s better to score political points before an election than to solve problems. … No to middle-class tax cuts. They say they’re for tax cuts; I say, okay, let’s give tax cuts to the middle class. No. No to clean energy jobs. No to making college more affordable. No to reforming Wall Street.” – President Obama Laborfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2010
President Obama is a Socialist, no, he’s a communist, no, he’s un-American (According to Pew only 27% of Republicans identified Obama as a Christian), no, he’s a big spending liberal, no, he’s African-American, whatever the reason may be the Republican Party has decided to oppose Obama on every decision he makes. Why do the Republicans hate Obama so much? It would be too simple, irresponsible, and unfair to say it is because of Obama’s race, while there might be some who oppose Obama because of his race it is not reflective of the Republican Party as a whole. So, why do Republicans hate Obama, the answer is actually quite simple, because they are bankrupt of any new ideas that will move this country forward.
Let’s take a quick look at some of Obama’s signature legislative achievements opposed by Republicans:
1) The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA): ARRA better known as the “Stimulus Act” is the $831 billion plan that helped prevent another Great Depression. According to the Congressional Budget Office ARRA help create/save 3.3 million jobs. Obama and the Democrats loaded the ARRA with tax cuts to garner Republican support, only 3 Republican Senators and no Republican House members voted for the legislation. Republicans would later go on to claim credit for the ARRA success in their districts.
2) Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: The Affordable Care Act better known as “Obamacare” allows young Americans to stay on their parents insurance plans up to age 26, provide mammograms colonoscopies at no additional cost, prevent discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, and Americans without health insurance will be able to buy it through state-based health exchanges. The most controversial item is the Individual mandate which requires every American to acquire health insurance. The Individual mandate was originally a Republican idea embraced by the Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, but once Obama embraced it the Republicans screamed SOCIALISM!
3) Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act: Better known as Dodd-Frank limited some of the risky practices on Wall Street that brought about the Great Recession and implemented consumer protections that protects consumers from unscrupulous lenders and predatory behavior from financial institutions. The bill had to be watered down in order to garner support from 1 Republican Senator.
4) Osama bin Laden: President Obama ordered the mission that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, yes, that Osama bin Laden who orchestrated the most devastating terrorist attack in U.S. history. Bin Laden’s killing was a big deal and major accomplishment. The Republicans claimed that the decision was not a hard one (they had 8 years to capture or kill Bin Laden and couldn’t) and claimed Obama was “spiking the football” over the killing. This criticism is coming from the party that declared “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq although thousands of Americans would continue to lose their life, the party who put Al-Qaeda members on a deck of playing cards treating the war in Iraq more like a game than serious war effort, yet Obama was the one “spiking the football”.
I could go on and on about how the Republican Party has been nothing more than obstructionist since Obama was elected. On the day of his inauguration, Republicans gathered to plot how they could hurt Obama and ensure that he fails. The top Republican Senator, Mitch McConnell, proclaimed that his party’s number one priority was to make Obama a one term President.
The Republican’s hatred of Obama has led to a stagnated economy, they have held the American economy hostage by refusing to raise the debt ceiling (something they have done dozens of times), refusing to extend tax breaks for middle class Americans and unemployment insurance (Something they have supported in the past), and they now refuse to do anything to protect Americans from the looming debt crisis in Europe.
President Obama is a middle of the road, pragmatic, Democrat who believes in compromise to a fault. Liberals wanted a bigger stimulus plan, a single-payer health care plan, tougher restrictions on Wall Street, and withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Liberals have grown frustrated with Obama on his slow policy shifts on gay rights and immigration reform. Liberals are upset with Obama and Republicans are delusional about Obama.
The Republican Party hasn’t been the party of Lincoln in over a hundred years and is no longer the Party of Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Reagan. Instead, the Republican Party has become a party of obstruction and HATES President Obama because they are bankrupt of any news ideas that will move this country forward.
